Easy pumpkin cake/cupcakes for dogs

This is our staple dog-safe cake recipe. Easy peasy with plenty of scope to substitute ingredients.

Ingredients

Cake
  • 1 ½ cups wholemeal or oat flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¾ cup pumpkin puree (store bought or boiled and blended) *see sub notes

  • 2 eggs

  • ½ cup banana puree (store bought or blended) *see sub notes

  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter

Frosting
  • 125 grams room temperature low-fat plain cream cheese (reduce to 75g if making muffins/cupcakes)

  • 2 cups low-fat greek yoghurt (reduce to 3/4 cup if making muffins/cupcakes)

  • 4 tbsp creamy peanut butter (reduce to 2 if making muffins/cupcakes)

Method

Cake

In a bowl. Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.)

In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients well (pumpkin puree, banana puree, eggs, and peanut butter.)

Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix to combine well.

Let your dog lick the spoon.

Pour into 2  x 15cm greased and/or lined cake tins or evenly into a large greased 6-place muffin tin.

Bake 25-35 minutes in a 180 degree Celsius fan-oven or until a toothpick in the centre comes out clean.

Let cool for 10 mins then turn out on to a rack to cool completely.

Frosting

Beat cream cheese until fully softened.

Add yoghurt and peanut butter and beat until fully combined.

For cakes spread half the frosting on top of one cake, place the other cake on top, then spread the remaining frosting on top using a spatula.

For muffins, pipe on frosting (or just use a spoon - your puperoon won't care.)

* Sub notes

Purees can be subbed with any fruit or vege you choose but at least one should be fruit for sweetness.

Important

Please be sure that your doggo is not allergic to any ingredients specified or ultimately used.

Make sure that your ingredients don't contain allergens or toxic substances like Xylitol sweetener.

Do NOT use flavoured cream cheeses such as onion, garlic, chives, etc, as they are toxic to dogs.
